Leonardo Loredan was the Doge of Venice from 1501–21. In Bellini's painting he is shown wearing his robes of state. The hat and ornate buttons are part of his official wardrobe. The sitter can be identified as Doge Loredan by comparing his features with portrait medals of him. The shape of the hat comes from the hood of a doublet.

In room 62 of The National Gallery in London, Doge Leonardo Loredan seems to be surveying the space with an air of quiet authority. It is an intriguing portrait; his face is remarkably realistic yet he is encased in a gown so stiff that it seems almost like a sculpted bust. 2016 marked the 500th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Bellini, the man who revolutionized Venetian painting. 2021-03-30 One of the paintings in storage suggested for restoration by Prof. W. R. Rearick, this work portrays Doge Leonardo Loredan, who reigned from 1501 to 1521. Loredan led Venice’s successful resistance against the armies of the League of Cambrai, the alliance of European powers seeking to counter the expansion of Venetian dominion on the mainland. Leonardo Loredan is age 65, and the life experiences of that many years show on his face.

Their leader, the doge, was elected to office for life by the city’s aristocracy. Portraits of doges were common, but Leonardo Loredan (1436-1521), ruler from 1501 until his death, was one of the most frequently depicted. Here Loredan wears the doge’s traditional corno ducale, a horn-shaped hat with an opulent jeweled border. Hints of the garment he wears reveal the sumptuously patterned formal state robes.
