Stick to darker colors (dryad bark, eshin grey, leadbelcher, etc) and then you can go in with a little lighter color if you want more contrast. What I would do to keep the armor interesting (not totally flat) but still keep it dark and grungy is base your dark areas in black or another really dark color, then start drybrushing then gently (omggently!) with your highlight colors, focusing on the edges and raised parts.
